Applicant Information for the
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program
The Counseling and Counseling Psychology faculty is committed to excellence in the education and training of professional counselors and admission to the program is highly competitive. Applications are evaluated for quality and diversity of experience and background, past academic achievement, personal statement and letters of recommendation. Please also consult the following checklist for additional guidance.
Competitive applicants must be admissible to the Graduate School, provide evidence of having a high level of academic aptitude, provide evidence of the application of the aptitude in the performance of academic endeavors, and demonstrate interest and commitment to mental health counseling and the profession it represents. Consequently, most applicants admitted to the Professional Counseling program demonstrate strong academic credentials, an academic background in psychology or a related field, and some clinically relevant experience. Applications for admission are reviewed once per year, and all materials must be received by December 1.
The Graduate School allows a maximum of six (6) semester hours of transfer work from other institutions. Nine (9) semester hours of graduate credit earned in a non-matriculated status at the University of Utah may be applied towards a degree. All transfer credit and credit earned in a non-matriculated status must be approved by the student's Supervisory Committee and by the Graduate School.
The Counseling and Counseling Psychology program will conduct a group interview for potential applicants. These applicants are selected from the pool of students that apply for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Applicants will be notified after the interview of their admittance status. If you are unable to attend our interview, please do not apply during this application cycle. Only in cases of extreme circumstances will we be able to schedule an alternative date.
On the application, For Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC), select "Educational Psychology MED". Applicants will have a chance to select a specific program.
You may contact Amy Edwards CMHC Training Program Director, and/or the CMHC Program Assistant at ed-clinicalcounseling@lists.utah.edu for further information.
